When I first heard that scientists have proven that honey is beneficial to the skin, I thought it was just a fad. However, after reading some of the research on it I became convinced that the benefits of honey for the skin were real.

It has been shown that honey has antioxidant properties and works as an effective moisturizer. But there are a few things that you need to be aware of before you rush out and begin spreading the sticky substance on your skin.

To begin with, there are different types of honey. Raw honey has a broad range of benefits for the skin. Pasteurized honey on the other hand (this is the honey we typically buy at the stores) has lost the vast majority of its healing properties.

One thing I learned as I looked into it is that one of the best types of honey for the skin comes from New Zealand. This is the honey that comes from the manuka bush. This special honey has much higher antioxidant and antibacterial properties than any other type of honey. These antioxidants work to reverse much of the effect of free radicals which is a known cause of premature aging of the skin.

Studies on manuka honey at a university in New Zealand have also shown that it supports skin cell regeneration as well as the production of more of the collagen protein.
